East Butterleigh Cob Barn

When we got this barn it was in a bad way. There had been significant ingress of water behind the cement render and the bottom section of the wall was incredibly frail. We were brought in to carry out some serious structural cob repairs. we propped up the top half of the wall and effectively underpinned it with new cob constructed of preshrunk cob blocks on lime mortar. There was a section of the barn which was not being worked on which ironically collapsed out of the blue on the last day of our proposed repairs. Thankfully nobody was underneath it as some of the lumps we easily the size of a car probably weighed more. This extended our time on site and we eventually left it with nearly half the barn rebuilt. We were required to carry out a few structural repairs to the roof after the collapse left it sagging a little in the corner.
